 Weekday sewing / craft evenings
« Thread Started on Nov 3, 2009, 7:24pm »

Hey everyone,

Was thinking that in addition to kit making sessions, it might be nice to have some small informal sewing / craft evening once a week/fortnight.

They would emphasise that kit making is primarily for actual measuring/cutting/pinning/assistance (hopefully leading to more people getting helped at kit making sessions) and also to encourage the freshers to keep at the slog of kit making.

I'm happy to have at least some of them at my house (and we *do* have a rather large film collection here...) but could only have them fortnightly here if they were on Tuesdays.

So, if people would like to vote on when would be most convenient for them. If you have multiple evenings regularly free, check all the evenings you are free. :)

Can everyone please vote on which day would be best. Thanks!

(P.S. The sessions, as they are in my mind at the moment, would be about 5 or 6pm until about 9:30pm, one evening a week, with films to spur us on with :)).

This sounds like a nice idea, and since everyone who's still a student has Wednesday afternoons off Wednesdays could be good days :)

Ok... the poll has decided. Since we only have 2 weeks after first kit making, there will be sewing sessions on both Mondays and Fridays (i.e. Mon 30th Nov, Fri 4th Dec and Mon 7th Dec). These are probably going to be at my house and will be 6pm-9pm. If you want tea while you're there, please bring a mug. I may do a kitty for tea/milk/sugar depending on how many people turn up and how many want tea (but it'll only be about 20-50p each if that).

The sessions will be for social sewing/crafting/tea-drinking/film-watching. There won't be much availability for help with things (so, probably no pinning of costumes) and I would seriously advise people against cutting out any fabric on our floor (don't ask). So, mostly it's just an opportunity to get on with sewing in a friendly environment with some good films. If you aren't making kit at the moment, feel free to bring craft stuff or just to come along for the social side. :)

Next term, the sessions are probably going to be Fridays only, although there may be the occasional Monday/other day one if there is demand.

I'm ok sewing on my own as long as I can get help pinning the dress. Is there a time when I can appear with fabric for this to be done? I have found a suitable fabric but I need to know how much to buy.

There will be a session on Sun 29th Nov 5:30-10pm in the Aneurin Bevan room (4th floor, students' union) where initial kit making will take part. Since there's quite a few people who are making kit, this session will be focussed on getting peoples' underwear (so, braies, shirt and coif for boys; underdress and headdress for girls) cut out and pinned together.

Madarian: I would strongly recommend against buying any fabric unless it has been checked by a member of the group who has experience in such matters. If you buy something that is inappropriate, you will NOT be allowed to wear it and you will have wasted your money. That said, perhaps if you asked at the pub sometime someone would be able to help you out (sorry, I don't know by your forum nickname who you are otherwise I might be able to help!)

Also, the sewing sessions are mostly intended to be social, so please feel free to come along to as many of them as you wish, even if you don't need help. :)

Thanks Mary(?)
It's Jenni Bergman. I'll come along to the kitmaking session with the gown that might be able to be made into a shift, and a sample of the fabric I had intended to buy (although I can't afford it right now).
